“how do we use this to conquer massive disengagement in a culture still ruled by trivialities?” Micheal Wesch

This question from Micheal’s presentation, “The Machine is (Changing) Us” is lingering.  As an educator with an audience of mainly 18 – 22 year olds before me each day, I really want to know.  What do you think?  How do we use this to that noble end???

  1. I hope you find an answer and share it with us. Social media obviously has tremendous potential for social change–ask Hosni Mubarak–but it also allows us to retreat into a comfortable cocoon in which we only have to listen to that which entertains us or reinforces our own belief systems. We probably didn’t end up with disengaged masses because of technology, but it’s difficult to discount its power to exacerbate an already disheartening situation. I’m hoping it will also provide a way back to informed civic engagement and enlightened discourse, and not just for a few.

  2. Me too. And I agree that we were disengaged long before tech exploded. If I get any “lightning bolts” on this topic, I will get back to you. Thanks, Skip.
